Cheo Mangum Performs at Wawa Welcome America as 2024 I AM PHL Winner
We caught up with Cheo Mangum, the 2024 I AM PHL Contest winner in the Music Category, as he prepared to perform at the Red, White, and Blue Block Party—part of the big Fourth of July celebration hosted by Wawa Welcome America.
This performance wasn’t just a cool moment—it was also a paid opportunity that came from Cheo winning the I AM PHL Contest, which is powered by PhillyGoes2College.
“I’m feeling great,” Cheo said. “I’m ready to perform and happy to be here.”
Cheo’s love for music and performance was clear. He told us how special this moment felt.
“This really means a lot to me,” he shared. “Getting to perform my own songs in the middle of Philly, in front of people—it means everything.”
Cheo performed four original songs, including Wings—the song that helped him win last year’s contest—and Quiet Storm, a fan favorite.
By his side was his proud mom, who cheered him on.
“He’s really passionate about music and media,” she said. “He puts his all into it, and I’m just so proud of him.”
Since winning the I AM PHL Contest, Cheo has been busy writing music, growing as an artist, and working with Miked Up Philly—a youth music and media mentorship program where he plays bass and explores digital media.
“This year has been full of growth,” he said. “I’ve been making music, learning new skills, and getting more chances to perform.”
Cheo also gave a shout-out to PhillyGoes2College, Wawa Welcome America, and Miked Up for helping make this moment happen. He first got noticed during a Fox 29 appearance promoting the I AM PHL Contest, which led to this summer concert slot.
When asked for advice to young performers, Cheo had this to say:
“Just be yourself. It’s normal to be nervous, but if you believe in your skills, you can put on a great show.”
After his high-energy set, Cheo was all smiles.
“I feel amazing. That was so fun. I always love performing, but today was extra special.”
This is what the I AM PHL Contest is all about—helping students like Cheo get seen, get paid, and get opportunities to grow.
