Veterans and their families
are eligible for dedicated federal financial aid. They can also take advantage of scholarships open to those who have served and resources that support veterans as they prepare for and graduate from college.
Preparing for College
- TRIO Veterans Upward Bound Program at the University of Pennsylvania is a FREE program that prepares veterans for college by offering intensive classes in Computer, Literature, Language Lab, Spanish, Math, and Science in addition to various life skills workshops.
- Study.com’s “Ultimate College Guide for Veterans & Active Service Members” is a good starting point that provides, among other information: tools to help veterans find schools that best suit their needs, employment support for veterans after graduation, and resources for dependents and spouses of veterans.
- The FAFSA is the first step anyone should take towards finding financial aid for college. It determines eligibility for federal and state grants and is used by colleges when they calculate financial aid packages. Information on completing the FAFSA specifically for veterans can be found here.

- Through the Yellow Ribbon Program colleges and universities agree to offer grants to cover a part of the difference between the financial aid veterans receive through the GI bill and the actual cost of attendance.
