Behind the Scenes of Scholars Advantage: A Conversation with Madeline Birkner

September 6, 2025

Meet Madeline Birkner, Senior Manager of Persistence and College Partnerships at The Philadelphia Education Fund and leader of the Scholars Advantage Program.

This summer, Madeline led an incredible journey to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), giving Philly students hands-on exposure to campus life, overnight stays, and a deeper understanding of what’s possible after high school.

🎓 About the Scholars Advantage Program

Madeline describes Scholars Advantage as:

“A stipended academic summer program for Philly teens. Students choose an academic class of interest, stick with it for several weeks, and if they show up ready to learn, they earn a stipend. It’s fun, engaging, and prepares them for what’s next.”

With academic rigor, interactive learning, and exposure opportunities, the program keeps students sharp and builds confidence in their future.

🌟 Why Trips Like IUP Matter

Madeline emphasized the importance of exposure:

“If you have the opportunity to see a college, tour it, sleep overnight, and really vibe it out—that’s valuable information for your future. Sometimes you’ll find what you love; other times, you’ll learn what you don’t want. Either way, that experience is priceless.”

This trip helped students:
✨ Get a real feel for college life
✨ Hear directly from IUP students and faculty
✨ Build confidence about leaving home while staying in-state

💜 The Power of Partnerships

Madeline proudly credited the program’s impact to supportive funders and collaborators:

“Programs like this take a lot of resources. We’re so lucky to have funders who believe in our students and invest in quality opportunities—like the Connelly Foundation, the Gene & Herbert Hansel Family Foundation, and Senator Vincent Hughes, who helped us secure funding to bring more West Philly students on board.”

✍️ Madeline’s Advice to Her Younger Self

When asked what she’d tell her high school self, Madeline said:

“It’s normal to not know everything. Ask for help. There are people paid to help you—find them. And get a handle on procrastination early; those habits will shape your success.”
