In Conversation w/ a West Philly All Star: Anthony on How Music Fuels His Dreams
This summer, PhillyGoes2College went live at the Beyond the Bars Youth Music Festival — an incredible event celebrating youth, creativity, and opportunity. We connected with students and performers to learn how music is shaping their passions and opening doors to the future.
Up first: Anthony, a talented West Philly teen, tuba player, and Philly Allstars participant who shared how music has influenced his journey.
Anthony’s Story 🎵
Anthony, a dedicated high school student from West Philadelphia, proudly plays the tuba — or, as he calls it, the “sousaphone.” Though the instrument is heavy, his passion for music keeps him motivated.
“I’ve been playing for almost two years,” Anthony shared. “It’s like family — it pushes me to get up and go to school, and it opens up opportunities for scholarships and college.”
Finding Inspiration Through Philly Allstars 🌟
Anthony is part of Philly Allstars, a summer program that gives young musicians the chance to practice, perform, and grow in community.
“It’s different,” Anthony says. “We get performance opportunities and the chance to play with others who love music as much as I do.”
For Anthony, music is more than a hobby — it’s a pathway to new possibilities, including scholarships and higher education.
Why Events Like Beyond the Bars Matter
The Beyond the Bars Youth Music Festival is about more than just music. It connects Philly youth with mentors, opportunities, and a sense of belonging. Students like Anthony leave inspired — not just to play, but to dream bigger.
