Activism in Action Creativity Contest

The African American Museum in Philadelphia invites current high school students to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the 2019 Activism in Action Creativity Contest. Sponsored by Citizens Bank, the contest challenges students to respond creatively to the following prompt…

  • How does social media influence activism?
  • Explore three examples of activism that leverage social media to further their cause.
  • How can YOU influence social media activism?

Creative Response: Answer the prompt using one of the following creative formats:

  • Writing: Personal or persuasive essay, poem, or short story with 400-500 typed words, double-spaced, 12 point font, and 1-inch margins
  •  Photo Essay: 4 to 10 photos with 400-500 words
  •  Film: Short film that runs for 1 to 5 minutes
  • Visual Art: Painting, drawing, graphic design, photography, sculpture, multimedia, multi-panel comic strip or book, and storyboard accompanied by a 200-400 word description

Submission Details:

  • Eligibility: Contestants must be current high school students (grades 9-12) in the Greater Philadelphia Region
  • Title Page: Each entry must include a separate title page with the student’s full name, grade, school name, e-mail address, home address, telephone number(s), and teacher’s name
  •  Deadline: Entries must be received by 5 pm on Monday, January 14th, 2018, e-mailed to volunteer@aampmuseum.org or mailed to The African American Museum in Philadelphia, c/0 Education Department, 701 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
  • Evaluation: Each entry will be judged on three criteria: Content, Creativity, and Technical Skill Prizes: 1st Place: $200 Gift Card, 2nd Place: $150 Gift Card, 3rd Place: $100 Gift Card, Honorable Mention: $50 Gift Card. All winners receive a FREE 1-year Family Membership to AAMP. Prizes will be awarded in person during the MLK Day of Service event on January 21st, 2019 at AAMP (winners must be present to receive prizes). Winning entries may be reproduced by AAMP either electronically or in print.
